Cookin’ Soul Celebrate 20th Anniversary of Erykah Badu’s ‘Baduizm’ With “Workizmmmmm”

February 14, 2017

Feb. 11th marks the 20th anniversary since the release of Erykah Badu‘s seminal debut album Baduizm, a project which scored the de facto leader of the neo-soul movement two GRAMMY awards (“Best R&B Album” and “Best Female R&B Vocal Performance”) and two GRAMMY nominations for “Best R&B Song” and “Best New Artist” for “On & On.”

The Roots, engineer extraordinaire Bob Power and legendary jazz musician Bobby Bradford were a few of the artists responsible for applying soulful brush strokes to Baduizm‘s canvas, helping to shape the afrocentric culture which emerged in the mid-90s and clearing the path for other like-minded artists like Maxwell, Bilal, Musiq Soulchild, Alicia Keys and Floetry.

The 14-track project — which was certified 3x platinum in 2013 — was packed with heady gems such as “4 Leaf Clover,” “Appletree,” the aforementioned “On & On,” “Drama” and “Next Lifetime” and launched the incomparable and silky smooth sounds of the Soulquarians collective, comprised of Questlove, J Dilla and Q-Tip

To help celebrate the brilliance of Baduizm, Cookin Soul have decided to remix the album’s third single “Otherside of the Game,” rechristening it “Workizmmmmm” — a fitting remix that even Dilla Dawg would be incredibly proud of.
