J. Cole Remixes A Tribe Called Quest’s “Can I Kick It?”

November 14, 2015

As each day passes, it appears that there is a hip hop anniversary of some sort. That isn’t an insult or negative connotation, however: this is a testament of sort to the culture’s intensely dense impact. One such influence was the music of A Tribe Called Quest. Q-Tip, Phife, Ali Shaheed Muhammed and Jarobi have inspired and affected legions of musicians, and the quartet is celebrating the 25th anniversary of their landmark album People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm with a mastered reissuing of the album, complete with a trio of reimaginations: Cee-Lo Green remixing “Footprints”, Pharrell lending his sensibilities to “Bonita Applebum” and J. Cole remaking “Can I Kick It?”

Grown Simba’s take on the classic call-and-response- track has arrived, which features the Dreamvillain giving the song a subdued, mellow energy. In comparison to Cee-Lo and Pharrell’s songs, this actually feels like it came from and ATCQ session from the 90s and is one of the better offerings between the three. Listen to it below, and score a copy of the 25th anniversary reissue of People’s Instinctive Travels.
