Moving beyond its core watch line (the Tambour), Louis Vuitton introduces the LV Fifty Five watch, here shown in a new round steel case with a slight curve and two riveted, engraved metal plaques – a throwback to its historic trunks. The dial is composed of two pieces, overlaid with letter “V” at each quarter hour, batons on the hours, and the “LV” signature 12 o’clock. LV also happens to be the foundation for the name of this watch – “LV” in Roman numerals = 55. The dial is completed with a “V” tipped GMT hand with a tone that matches its numbering on the dial. Promiscuous branding, yes, but I do kinda like the look.
The letter V is further engraved and symbolically repeated across the timepiece in the GMT hand, hour & minute markers, buckle and crown. The finely engraved winding crown is also reminiscent of the heads of the trunk rivets. These will be priced around $5,000. Two additional sizes, each sporting a different movement, are also offered: 1) a 31mm feminine model housing a quartz ETA caliber and priced around $3,300, and 2) a 36mm unisex model with an automatic mechanical ETA 2892. Coming January 2016.
