After a successful 2012 which saw the revival of iconic sneakers like the Reebok Question, Reebok Answer IV and the Reebok ES22, this year is prepping up to be even bigger as one of the NBA’s most iconic figures makes his return to the brand. It’s been a long time coming but Reebok Classics and Swizz Beatz have managed to bring Shaquille O’Neal back into the mix and his first official appearance back with Reebok will take place at the PROJECT Trade Show in Las Vegas.
But before we get to that, we want to take this time to feature one of the best releases during this Reebok resurgence, the Reebok Kamikaze II “Sonics.” Featuring the classic colors of the Seattle Supersonics that Shawn Kemp wore in the 90s, the tribute colorway is a lesson in sneaker storytelling. So often that term gets tossed around and few people actually understand what it means to tell the story of an athlete through the sneakers. In the case of the “Sonics” colorway, not only is the timing of the release perfect (barring a miracle the size of DeMarcus Cousins, the Sacramento Kings are headed to Seattle) but the historic details within the shoe – from the way the green sole and yellow speckles contrast like they once did in the classic Sonics uniforms to the clear rubber bumps all along the metalltic green upper to symbolize Kemp’s “Reign Man” nickname – are some of the best we have seen in some time.
So here is a special look at the “Sonics” Kamikaze II, which will surely come up again during the end of the year when the discussion for the best kicks of 2013 heats up. Enjoy and let us know what you think in the comments section below.
