Fat Shounen Sundays (Weekly Manga Review) : Team Medical Dragon

July 1, 2012

Hey guys! I do apologise for my absence last week! But I’m back this week with a very unique manga that I’d like to review and share with you all! This manga in Japanese is called ‘医龍 Iryu’ or in English as ‘Team Medical Dragon’.

This manga could be one of the most serious manga’s I’ve ever read in terms of strong content. It reflects on the problems and issues that remain a curse on the modern Japanese Health care system. It focuses on issues in Japan Medicine such as medicinal malpractice, drug trials as well as corruptions within the Japanese medical care system. Not sure if they are based off real situations, but it has definitely opened my eyes to that world. Should I remain completely oblivious to it??? Apparently the author of this story was a successful doctor and a medical journalist, so I’m guessing that S**T that happened in the manga is actually real? This manga has been made into a Japanese Drama as well and is currently up to its 3rd season.

Asada Ryutaro is a surgical prodigy specialising in Cardiac Surgery, he was framed for misdiagnosis and was let go by the North Japanese Hospital. He then lived in a seaside shack and one day he was visited by Kato Akira, who then was an assistant professor of the Faculty of Cardiac Surgery at Meishin Universtiy Hospital. For Kato to become a professor in the Cardiac Surgery department, she had a goal set on achieving a surgery using the highly difficult technique called the ‘Batista Technique’. After witnessing Asada’s surgery skills when he was an NGO doctor, she was extremely impressed with his surgical skills and wanted him to be apart of her Batista Team. The story goes on showing how Asada and Kato gathered more talented doctors to join their team and together they face the grim side of the Japanese Medical profession.

Read the comic when you have the chance, I think this manga is really well illustrated, makes it even more enticing to read! OH! and definitely watch the Japanese Drama, it’s really awesome. Enjoy guys!
