Fat Shounen Sundays (Weekly Manga Review) : JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures

May 20, 2012

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures manga series has got to be one of the longest manga series I know. Dating back to 1987, it is still currently running. The manga features many arcs, each of them is an adventure of a member in the Joestar family spanning from different generations. Each arc has its own unique story and it involves a lot of interesting concepts that either seem ridiculous or just plain cool. (as a kid I was blown away from it all!). I have only read the first 4 arc’s as I found them to be the best ones with really interesting stories, later on I found that Hirohiko (manga artist) was drawing his male characters a little too girlish, hence why I stopped reading. I really should finish it off.  Enough blabber! I will just tease you with the synopsis of the first arc, The Phantom Blood, which is the beginning of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.

Story dates back in 1880, Jonathan Joestar is a young strong man who comes from a rich and powerful English Family, the ‘Joestar’s. Long ago, George (Jonathan’s father) and his mother was involved in an accident, Dario Brando, a common thief saw the accident and went to scavenge for goods. George thought Dario was trying to save them, hence why he felt in debt to Dario. When Dario was dying, he wrote a letter to George Joestar asking him to take care of his son Dio. In the beginning Jonathan tried to be friends with Dio, but Dio had a different agenda and drove Jonathan into madness in order to become the heir of the Joestar empire. He violently beat Jonathan in a boxing match, stole his friends, took away Jonathan’s girlfriend’s first kiss, and killed Jonathan’s best friend, his dog (Danny).

Dio plotted to overtake the Joestar by poisoning Jonathans’s father with “medicine”. Jonathan was suspicious about Dio’s activity and eventually found an old letter written by Dio’s father before he died asking George to take care of Dio. The letter also mentioned about his sickness, which Jonathan found was identical to his father’s symptoms, hence Jonathan believes that his father’s sickness was actually Dio’s doing.

Dio found out about Jonathan’s knowledge of his plan, and decided to kill him. Dio puts on an ancient mask. The mask is believed to possess vampiric powers. Dio and Jonathan fought, and during the fight they caused a fire in the mansion and eventually burned his it down with Dio in it. Dio survived and strived to seek revenge.

Now homeless, Jonathan Joestar begins his journey to stop Dio.

In other arc, you will see other ridiculous fighting powers such as “the ripple” and “the stand”, once you read it, you will understand what I mean! Haha so get cracking guys!! The picture are from various of Arc, so just some cool and weird stuff you will be expecting to see! ENJOY!
