Fat Shounen Sundays (Weekly Manga Review) : Hajime No Ippo

April 1, 2012

Hajime no Ippo or aka Fighting Spirit is one of my favourite manga of all time! Thats right! OF ALL TIME! It’s been released during the 90s but it wasn’t until my high school days…in the early 2000 that I started reading the manga and watched the Anime. Hajime no Ippo is a sports manga about boxing and it has pretty much a perfect balance of action, drama and comedy, and every chapter of the manga and every episode of the anime had been a delight to watch! I got me wishing that I started Boxing earlier…why!!!!! Anyways enough of my jibby jabber!

Hajime no Ippo in Japanese literally translate to ‘The first step’ in English. How did I come up with this name?? Well Ippo is the name of the main character of this manga. His full name is Makunouchi Ippo, and he is a son of a fishing boat captain. Father past away early hence Ippo’s mother took over the business and Ippo grew up helping his mother. Ippo was a timid kid, always get bullied at school, but he was too shy and nervous to retaliate, hence making the kids wanting to bully him even more. One day on his way home, he was approached by school bullies and got severely injured, during that time he vaguely remembered a boxer who came and took care of the bullied and he witness his boxing skill, but soon he past out. Ippo woke up to the noise of boxing glove hitting sand bags and sparring, he realised he was at a boxing gym, Kamogawa’s Boxing Gym. This gym is where his saviour goes to train. Takamura tried to cheer Ippo up by letting him hit the sandbags and that is where the gym owner/ trainer had the first insight of Ippos raw talent.

Eventually Ippo joined the Kamogawa’s boxing gym where Takamura goes, and his real journey to glory start from that point onwards….

Gosh I wanted to keep on telling the story but that will just ruined for you dear potential readers, WHAT THE POINT OF READING IF IM GOING TO SPOIL IT FOR YOU!!! BUT I WANT TO TELL MOARRRRRRR! Nahhh Jokes! Please read this manga, it is ABSOLUTELY fantastic! and there’s 98 volumes guys! you have a lot of catching up to do!!! Enjoy!!
