Fat Shounen Sundays (Weekly Manga Review) : Great Teacher Onizuka

March 11, 2012

Great Teacher Onizuka ‘GTO’ for short, is a fantastic manga written in 1997, which ran until 2002. It has 25 volumes full of laughter and, to me, it is one of the funniest manga’s I’ve ever read in my life! The story teaches you some important values in society by addressing many real life issues. GTO is definitely a highly recommended read as it is a hilarious manga that’ll make you laugh your ass off.

GTO is about Eikichi Onizuka, a 22 year old ex bike gang member and a virgin. He is perverted, likes to look up the girls skirts and is constantly on the quest to get himself laid. After a girl agrees to go out on a date with him, he tries to sleep with her in a love hotel, but was eventually stopped by the girl’s lover, her high school teacher! The teacher was a bold ugly looking man, in which the girl had a strong love for. She leaps out the hotel from the second storey into the teacher arms and amazed Onizuka. That act of love eventually became his driving force to becoming a high school teacher.

Students with little knowledge of Onizuka, looked down and teases him, but with Onizuka’s unorthodox teaching style, he is able to connect with delinquent kids and help solve their personal issues. This is when things get really interesting.

If you have the time, do check out the Anime as well as the Live Action Drama!
