Fat Shounen Sundays (Weekly Manga Review) : Berserk

January 22, 2012

Hello my fellow dedicated or to be manga viewers!

Yes! It is that time again! every week!! :P boy is this manga good or what!!!

The manga I’m reviewing is called Berserk, ベルセルク, Beruseruku.

This is actually quite an old manga that started in 1990, and it’s still going til’ today.

Set in the Medieval period, the Protagonist is a tall, muscular man called Guts, he is known as the black swordsman. He carries a huge sword and is called the Dragon Slayer, with a mechanical arm (find out how he got a fake arm by reading! :D ) that can shoot arrows and cannons, he is a man that can not be defeated!

This manga has a very complicated story and it is separated into different events for Guts. At the start, Guts runs into a group of mercenaries called ‘Band of the Hawks’ where he meets Griffiths, his best friend and his love Casca. Griffith is the charismatic leader of Band of the Hawks, he is also the carrier of the king Behelit, which serves as an important purpose later on in the story. With Guts’ help, the Band of the Hawks quickly turned from a bunch of mercenaries into a respected army. Kings from all nations seek the help of the Hawks for war, and the Hawks guaranteed victory, this made Griffith and the Hawks very important people. However good life doesn’t last forever, not long after Guts decide to leave the Hawks, Griffith was caught and tortured for courting, sleeping with the kings daughter. He was tortured for a long time, but Guts eventually rescues him. Soon after that event the story shifts from reality into fantasy and dark horror (exciting).

What I love about this manga is the rich content of the story, with each character having their own stories, it’s a delight to read. I got into the manga because of the anime i watched. It was so addictive! Now they’re even remaking the old Anime with updated graphics and everything! Can’t wait for it!

I say this every time I review a manga, because I only review the ones I like… and THIS ONE I LOVE! It’s on my Top 10 manga recommendations so far so its gotta mean something.

Enjoy reading it guys!!
