July 11, 2011

1000 AD, for years, One Eye, a mute warrior of supernatural strength, has been held prisoner by the Norse chieftain Barde. Aided by Are, a boy slave, One Eye slays his captor and together he and Are escape, beginning a journey into the heart of darkness. On their flight, One Eye and Are board a Viking vessel, but the ship is soon engulfed by an endless fog that clears only as the crew sights an unknown land. As the new world reveals its secrets and the Vikings confront their terrible and bloody fate, One Eye discovers his true self.

Talk about an epic trip!
If you’ve got yourself a copy of the latest Valhalla Rising DVD, you’re in for one hell of a journey. As the synopsis states, its about a Scandinavian viking called ‘One Eye’ that was abandoned and used for amusement in private fights. He managed to escape one day, met a group of crusaders and was convinced to join them in their quest to the Holy Land.

The story line is fairly simple and straight forward, but what makes VR so amazing is its visuals, cinematography and props. Shattered skulls, popping intestines, and headless men are just the beginning to what you’re about to experience. The starting fight sequence in itself definitely sets the pace for the entire movie, with One Eye chained to a pole and forced to fight for his life in a brutal battle, we see him shatter skulls and break necks with much ease.

Its dark atmosphere and minimal scripting, makes the movie very moody and intense, much like a horror meets melo drama flick. You definitely need to be in that dark minimal dialogue mood to watch this gory film. Nicholas Winding Refn is one director to watch out for in the near future. He has been making some killer movies in his short time in the industry.

Good acting, awesome wardrobe, amazing props and gruesome visuals. What more do you need? Cop your copy of Valhalla Rising at MADMAN today to witness the trip for yourself.

Fat Kids Rating 7.5/10

NOTE: This movie is not for the weak hearted. We kid you not!
