Chinese contemporary artist Yue Minjun is an early proponent of Cynical Realism , which was a form of subtle protest against the Chinese governments crackdown at Tiananmen Square. His art either in sculpture or in paintings are characterised by the “grin”. This “grin” is an expression only really known to either the painter or the subject displayed.
Yue Minjun currently has an exhibition in New York at the Arario Gallery.
