Letizia Battaglia – “Portraying the Mafia”

November 13, 2009

Portrayals of organized crime especially regarding the “mafia” have often been glorified and sensationalized in modern media.  With this in mind it is easy to forget the actual effect of any form of organised crime in society.  A recent exhibition covers the work of a photographer who gained fame in the ’70s and ’80s for her documentation of the internal war of the Mafia in Sicily at its bloodiest, and its devastating impact on the rest of the society.  Below are snippets of such photos by Letizia Battaglia.

Some of the photos may be confronting and do depict some violence.  So hit the jump if you will not be offended by her work.
